3 tasty ways to celebrate National Peanut Day

Peanut butter is a staple in virtually every home today.

Nuts about peanuts? Then this Sunday is a day you'll be crazy for, because it's National Peanut Day. 

Devoting an entire day to the humble peanut may seem "nutty," but when you stop to consider all the ways that peanuts are used – and the variety of ways they're eaten – making Sept. 13 National Peanut Day was a no-brainer with fall being harvest time.

For instance, approximately two-thirds of all snack nuts consumed in the U.S. each year are peanuts, according to the National Peanut Board. Americans spend nearly $800 million a year on peanut butter alone. In fact, in order to make a 12-ounce jar, you need 540 peanuts to fill it up to its creamy – or chunky – top.

From the baseball diamond to the squared circle, on planes or on trains, peanuts are the crunch of choice for sports fans and travelers everywhere. And even though they're usually enjoyed as a salted snack, many sweet treats are laden with peanuts, which are technically legumes. The Peanut Board points out that four of the 10 top-selling candy bars in the U.S. all contain peanuts or peanut butter.

Here's a handful of the ways you can celebrate National Peanut Day, but there's plenty more than the number of nuts you can fill even in two hands:

Have a peanut butter sandwich
When's the last time you had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? This lunch staple is enjoyed by millions of Americans daily, both young and old, in school and at work. And there's plenty more where that came from when you consider that on a peanut farm, one acre can make 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches, according to the National Peanut Board.

Go to a ball game
No matter what MLB ballpark you're located near, you're sure to hear cries of "Get your peanuts here!" from vendors perusing the aisles. Peanuts have long been considered a fan favorite, though more parks are introducing others, like pistachios and almonds.

Enjoy it as a nutritious snack
You name the time of day, peanuts kill cravings, thanks to that signature texture and crunchiness. Plus, while many snack foods aren't good for you, that definitely doesn't apply with the mighty peanut, as it's a quality source of unsaturated fat and high in vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin that's crucial to digestion and healthy skin.
