With nearly 160 million people in the labor force, Americans devote much of their efforts to providing for their families so they can put food on the table. But on Labor Day – the annual holiday that celebrates work ethic – it's time to kick back, relax and take it easy for awhile. And what better way to do that than with a scenic drive in the countryside?
During this coming Labor Day weekend, take a drive down these picturesque roads in Virginia, ones you may visit while traveling through the beautiful countryside.
George Washington Memorial Parkway
The George Washington Memorial Parkway is teeming with motorists looking to get to work on most days of the week, but it's also great for taking in the scenery. Some of Virginia's most well-known parts on the map are all viewable from this perch, including the Potomac River and the newly renovated National Monument in Washington, D.C.
With a name like Skyline Drive, you know what the prominent feature is on this stretch of road, laid out over 105 miles. Plus, with the autumn approaching, you'll be able to see the beginnings of fall foliage season, as the leaves are starting to turn into those brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Along the way, you may want to stop at Luray Caverns for a dazzling visitor experience.
Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail
The American pioneer Daniel Boone may be best known for helping with the settlement of Kentucky, but the woodsman is also remembered in Virginia due to the wilderness trail. Boone himself helped clear this trail for settlers, which today is one of the most well-recognized and historic routes in the country. Spanning over 140 miles, National Tunnel State Park, the Cumberland Gap, and National Tunnel State Park are all found along this scenic stretch in the far western portion of the state.
Blue Ridge Parkway
It's hard to pick between mountain landscape or forested hills, as they both make for the best feast for the eyes. Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, it's a little bit of both, as Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains are both prominent features along the 469 miles of road. Wildlife is also easy to spot, including 59 species of birds that nest in neighboring trees.
After experiencing some of these scenic sights, you may want to start taking the long way to the office come Tuesday morning.
