Cellphone safety for drivers in Maryland after stricter laws pass

Texting and driving can cause accidents

Motorists in Maryland will now face stricter penalties for texting and driving after legislators passed Jake’s Law, which creates a punishment of up to three years in prison, according to CBS Baltimore.

For this reason, residents of the Old Line State may want to brush up on the following cellphone safety tips:

Turn the ringer on silent

Even  the most disciplined driver may have the urge to answer their cellphone when it rings, which is why you may want to consider silencing your phone. This step allows you to drive distraction-free, as someone could call or text you, and there is no way you’d know. To stay safe on the road, it is recommended that you only answer texts and phone calls once you reach your destination, so silencing your ringer shouldn’t be a problem. However, you should keep your phone in a secure location to make sure it’s easily accessible in case of an emergency.

Pull off the road to make calls

In certain situations, you’ll need to make or take a phone call while behind the wheel. To protect yourself – and others on the road – you should consider pulling off the road before doing so. This may seem like an inconvenience, but even if you’re using a hands-free device, there is still the chance you could be distracted, and cause an accident.

Do not text while driving

Taking a phone call when driving is distracting in itself, but texting is much worse. This requires you to take your eyes off the road to type a message, and all it takes is a split second to end up rear-ending the driver in front of you. Younger drivers are often more likely to text and drive, which is troubling as these people are generally the least experienced behind the wheel. It is best to avoid texting at all, even if you have voice controls.

If you’re distracted by your cellphone, and end up causing an accident, there are many consequences. With the passage of Jake’s Law, you could now face jail time, but you also need to be worried about your insurance. It may be difficult to find cheap car insurance in Maryland if you cause an accident, so consider the above tips, and put them to use on the road.
