Elephant sponsors a local favorite Richmond tradition

Over 30,000 people are expected to participate in this year's 10k on Monument Avenue.

Richmond's Monument Avenue is known as a residential tree-lined street which extends for several miles from the inner city of Richmond all the way to Henrico County. The avenue takes its name from the series of monumental statues that mark its major intersections, generally in the center of traffic circles.  In April, however, when spring is in full bloom and the sun is shining, the national landmark is peppered with thousands for an annual road race.

The 17th annual Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K is approaching. It's one of the more highly anticipated events in Richmond for participants and onlookers alike. Named by USA Today as one of the best races in the country, more than 30,000 people are expected to participate in this year's 6.2-mile event, ready to hit the ground running the morning of April 9 at the intersection of Broad and Harrison streets.

Started in 2000, the Monument Avenue 10K is the 22nd-largest race in the world, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

If you've been to one before, it's easy to understand why it's garnered the attention it has since 2000. In addition to Monument Avenue's gorgeous landscape and historic landmarks and homes, it's about much more than running. Spectators and participants alike go all out to "look the part," wearing wild and crazy costumes showing off their creativity and variety. Additionally, local bands are always a part of the day-long festivities as well.

Elephant official auto insurance sponsor

Just as the participation and the excitement have grown over the years, so have the number of the race's sponsors. This year marks Elephant's first year of involvement with the Monument 10k, and they're the official auto insurance partner of the race.

"When you think of all the great Richmond traditions, the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K is one of the first ones that come to many people's minds," said Greg Minkler, Elephant Auto Insurance Director of Marketing. "Being headquartered in Richmond, we want to support and be involved with all of the great traditions that the city has to offer."

This year, you'll see Elephant Auto Insurance at both the Packet Pick Up on April 7 and 8, as well as on-site on race day. Starting at 7:30 a.m. – one hour before the 10K begins – Elephant will also be hosting the Elephant Auto Insurance Bag Check. This is where competitors can drop off their items and valuables – so runners can rest assured that their belongings with be kept safe while they're participating. What's more, there'll be plenty of free Elephant gear to pick up and take home all weekend long too!
