If it seems like everything these days is costing more than it used to, you wouldn't be the first to notice this. From the cost of food to what you spend to see the latest box office smash, it's taking more green for today's necessities and entertainment.
However, you might be surprised to learn that auto insurance is becoming more affordable for virtually all income groups.
According to a recent study conducted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, since 1990 to the 2000, most states have witnessed improved affordability. This trend has continued over the last decade, with New Hampshire, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Virginia posting the largest gains in affordability, the Insurance Research Council reported.
More people shopping, but fewer switching
By its very nature, competition helps to keep auto insurance premiums lower. Consumers know this, which is why more customers are shopping for auto insurance, according to a separate survey done by J.D. Power and Associates. While more people are shopping around, however, fewer are switching. For example, last year, only 29 percent of people in the J.D. Power survey changed insurers, down from 37 percent in 2013.
Valerie Monet, director of insurance at J.D. Power, noted that policyholders' decision to switch is heavily dependent on the deal they find.
"Customers who shop and do find a better deal will likely switch insurers," Monet explained. "Increasing satisfaction scores among customers who recently switched suggests that those customers are pleased with the price they receive."
Auto insurance policies usually last for a year, but just because your term may not be expiring for a while doesn't mean you shouldn't be shopping to see what else is out there. In fact, it's important to always be on the lookout.
Look for seasonal discounts
One of the main reasons you may be able to find a better deal is that rates aren't always fixed. In other words, depending on the time of year, discounts are offered that make switching worthwhile, providing savings that are simply too good to pass up. Elephant Auto Insurance has discounts aplenty that are seasonal, but also those that are always available, like paperless discounts and student discounts.
Are you looking to move this year? Between 2013 and 2014, nearly 36 million people changed residences, according to a recent survey from the U.S. Census Bureau. Moving to a different part of the country may not only bring with it lower rates, but you may not be driving as frequently at your new location. This fact alone can make looking for a different policy worthwhile.
