4 divine donut destinations in the D.C. area
Whether as a morning staple or an afternoon splurge, nearly two-thirds of Americans have them on a regular basis – donuts. And this Friday, the pastry specialty is in the spotlight.
June 5 is National Donut Day, and you can bet that your nearest shop will be ringing it in with some type of promotion, hoping to lure customers into their doors. Krispy Kreme, for example, is offering one free donut as a way to celebrate.
Believe it or not, this is a day that’s steeped in history. The Salvation Army started National Donut Day as a way to raise funds for social service programs during the Great Depression. The initiative was a success, and the day has been around ever since.
More than 10 billion donuts are made every year in the U.S. alone, according to industry statistics, and a substantial portion of these delectable treats are produced in the nation’s capital. If you live in or are visiting the District of Columbia – or the surrounding areas – the following shops never fail at whipping up a tasty batch:
Short for Golden Brown Delicious, GBD is a Beltway mainstay located on Connecticut Avenue. Besides the fact that there’s a huge list of donuts to choose from, they come in a variety of shapes, rather than the customary circle. The square-shaped Nutella donut is topped toasted hazelnuts, the Passion Fruit Old-Fashioned looks like a flower, and the Peanut Butter and Jelly mirrors a sandwich – with a hole in the middle, of course.
Migue’s Magnificent Mini Donuts
The weekends are always something to look forward to, but it’s particularly exciting for those in D.C., as this is when Migue’s Magnificent Mini Donuts sets up its food stand. Frequenters say the shop serves up the freshest donut in town – and you can understand why, because they’re custom-made to order. Find Migue’s at 635 North Carolina Avenue South East.
Sugar Shack Donuts
If your comings and goings take you to the D.C. suburbs, be sure to visit Sugar Shack Donuts. Opening in 2013, Sugar Shack doesn’t have the history that other long-standing donut destinations have, but you wouldn’t know it based on the rave reviews that it’s gotten from various media outlets, including USA Today, Thrillist, Style Weekly, and Richmond Weekly. Sugar Shack has three locations in the Virginia area.
Astro Donuts and Fried Chicken
Chicken and waffles is a southern fare specialty, but more restaurants are offering donuts as another option. One of them is Astro Donuts and Fried Chicken, located on G Street North West. Pairing the sweetness of a donut with the savory taste of chicken may seem a bit unusual, but fans say don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Astro only offers four donuts every day – vanilla glazed, maple bacon, peanut butter and jelly as well as creme brulee – but peppers in five others every other week.
On National Donut Day, make sure you pay a visit to one of these donut shops for a sweet treat that will make your taste buds sing for joy.
