History

Elephant Insurance began offering auto insurance policies to drivers in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2009. The company expanded to Maryland, Illinois, and Texas in 2012, followed by launches in the Indiana and Tennessee markets in 2016. Ohio was added to its footprint in 2020, with Georgia following in February 2021. In January 2026, Elephant joined the portfolio of companies owned by private equity firm J.C. Flowers & Co.

A direct-to-consumer carrier provides access to insurance through an online application process. Pricing and underwriting of the policy are conducted through the consumer’s interaction with the online quote journey. If preferred, the consumer can also speak with a licensed agent to buy or service an auto insurance policy.

Andrew Rose founded Elephant Insurance and served as its CEO until 2012, when he departed to become President and CEO of Compare.com, a comparison-shopping website and subsidiary of Elephant’s founding company, Admiral Group. Kevin Chidwick, former Group Finance Director at Admiral Group and CEO of Confused.com, succeeded Rose and led Elephant from 2012 to 2017. Following Chidwick’s departure, Admiral Group co-founder and former CEO Henry Engelhardt served as interim CEO. Alberto Schiavon, a native of Italy, was appointed CEO in 2017 after five years with Admiral Group and continues to lead Elephant Insurance today.

NAIC Score

Elephant is proud to share its strong 2024 National Complaint Index score from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Our rating for Private Passenger Policy Types—car insurance for personal vehicles—was better than expected in the market. In simple terms, this means Elephant receives fewer complaints than what’s expected from the typical auto insurance company, a distinction that reflects our commitment to customer satisfaction and service.

Elephant Insurance's NAIC score for the Private Passenger Insurance category is below expected rate according to the index

Why the Private Passenger Score Matters Most

Elephant’s NAIC Private Passenger Complaint Index score is the most meaningful measure of our performance. It’s the apples-to-apples comparison of our share of auto insurance complaints (relative to our premium volume) with auto insurance complaints at other companies. And auto insurance is the only insurance we sell and service.

By contrast, the NAIC “All Policy Types” score, sometimes used by auto insurance review sites, includes every line of insurance sold in the U.S., even those Elephant doesn’t write. But different lines of insurance have different numbers of claims. For example, auto claims (and associated complaints) tend to be more common than homeowner’s claims. Thus, the “All Policy Types” score leads to an artificially better score for multi-line insurers because much of their business is in types of insurance with fewer complaints.

In simple terms: Our NAIC Private Passenger score reflects how customers experience the product we provide, while the NAIC All Policy score magnifies results by comparing us to markets we don’t participate in.
